    Short answer

Funäsfjällen has six alpine ski areas on the same lift pass, and all of them have something for small children: Lo-landet on Funäsdalsberget, Lillramis in Ramundberget, and Krokskogen and Hamra in Tänndalen. Children up to age six ski free on the slopes if they wear a helmet, and children up to 15 ski free on the cross-country trails. The 2026/27 season starts on 18–19 December.

All six alpine ski areas are included in the Fjällpass. Bruksvallarna only has cross-country trails.

Funäsdalen is not a single ski resort. The village lies in the middle of Funäsfjällen, an area at the far western end of Härjedalen with six alpine ski areas, around 150 runs and 300 km of cross-country trails, all on the same pass. For a family with children, that means you can stay in one village and still choose a children's slope depending on how everyone is feeling that day. This guide is about winter. You can read about what Funäsdalen is like on a summer night among the mountain tarns in night hiking in Funäsdalen.

    Six ski areas, one valley

Funäsdalsberget rises right behind the village, and the Funäsgondolen takes you from the village centre to the top in a few minutes. The slopes have 330 metres of vertical and are a mix of steep sections and tree runs, and the beginners stay in Lo-landet at the bottom.

Tänndalen is the biggest, with 57 pistes, 16 surface lifts and two chairlifts. Hamra is not a separate village but part of Tänndalen, and a large share of the children's skiing is there. Ramundberget is 20 km away at the end of the road, with 50 runs and plenty of natural snow. Tännäskröket is by the village of Tännäs and has nine south-facing runs. Kappruet and Tänndalsvallen are small, quiet ski areas for the youngest. Bruksvallarna has no lifts at all, but it is the area's cross-country skiing village.

The children's areas – choose by your children's age

Krokskogen in Tännporten in Tänndalen is perhaps the area's best place for children: children's lifts, a new magic carpet, forest trails, a new sledging hill and barbecue spots. It is home to the mascots Alvar, Lallo and Björna. In Hamra there is a children's area with a children's lift, a magic carpet and a warming hut, Drömskogen with forest trails, and the Äventyret fun slope on the green Fäbodsvängen run.

In Ramundberget the children's slope is called Lillramis, where Mickelina the Arctic fox has her world. There is a button lift, a magic carpet, a short children's cross-country trail, a café, a warming hut and barbecue huts. Children can ride the lifts in Lillramis without a pass of their own if the parent has a lift pass.

On Funäsdalsberget, Lo-landet with the mascot Lilla Lo is the place to be. Tännäskröket has Malte's forest trails and Kappruet has Raskar's forest. In Kappruet all the slopes end in the same place, which is handy when you want to keep an eye on a three-year-old and a seven-year-old at the same time.

    The ski school

On Funäsdalsberget, the children are in groups by age and level. Four- to six-year-olds start in the green Explorers group (Upptäckarna), where they learn to snowplough, stop and ride the button lift in Lo-landet. Seven- to ten-year-olds can move on to the blue, red and black groups, which ski all over the mountain. The ski school runs Monday to Friday from week 52 to week 15, one hour a day. Which groups run depends on demand.

Tänndalen, Ramundberget, Tännäskröket and Kappruet have their own ski schools, and Ramundberget has groups for the very youngest in Lillramis. Book ski school where you are staying, so you don't have to drive every morning. You can compare how a ski school for small children can be set up in Idre Fjäll ski school.

Fjällpass – one pass for everything

The lift pass is called Fjällpass and is valid in all six ski areas, including evening skiing and the ski bus between the villages. Children up to and including age six ski free with a helmet. Young people aged 7 to 17 pay less than adults, and it is always cheapest to buy the pass online – and cheaper still for a whole week if you book at least 30 days before your first day on the slopes. There is a parent pass that two parents can share.

If the family wants to do both downhill and cross-country skiing, there is Fjällpass Kombi, where the same pass also gives access to the cross-country trails. Current prices are shown when you book.

Cross-country skiing – free for the children

This is where Funäsfjällen stands out. Children up to 15 ski free on the cross-country trails, and the trail network covers 300 km, between the villages and up onto the bare mountain. In Funäsdalen, Tänndalen, Tännäskröket, Bruksvallarna and Ramundberget there are short fairy-tale-themed children's trails, with signs where the mascots tell stories and give technique tips. The children's trail in Funäsdalen starts at the playground at Risnäset by Lake Funäsdalssjön.

A tip for a slightly bigger skier: take the chairlift in Ramundberget up to the mountain trails, ski a stretch across the bare mountain and take the ski bus home. If you can't wait to get going, Bruksvallarna opens cross-country trails on stored snow as early as the end of October.

Things to do in Funäsdalen off the slopes

A day without skiing doesn't have to be a day in the cabin:

    • Härjedalens Fjällmuseum in the middle of Funäsdalen. The children crawl through a secret passage into the world of the little people and a summer farm cottage with cows to milk and a lake where the fish always bite. Café Gästis has an open fire and soup.
    • The Funäsgondolen from the village centre to the top, even for those who don't ski. Bring a hot chocolate in the flask, ideally with mint and cream.
    • Sledging and snow racers on the slopes in Krokskogen and Lillramis. Tänndalen has tubing, and a few times a week the ski school takes snow racers down from the top.
    • Myskoxcentrum, the musk ox centre just outside Tännäs, with guided tours to see the musk oxen.
    • Ice fishing on the mountain lakes, waffle huts and guided snowmobile trips.
    • Playrooms in Krokstugan and at the Ski Lodge in Tänndalen, and in Fjällgården in Ramundberget.

There are more ideas for days when someone in the family doesn't want to ski in ski holiday without skiing.

    Getting to Funäsdalen

Funäsdalen is 560 km from Stockholm, 710 km from Gothenburg and 970 km from Malmö, and road 84 from Sveg goes all the way there. Without a car:

    • Bus: The Härjedalingen coach runs from Stockholm, Uppsala and Gävle six days a week and stops in the middle of the village.
    • By train: Snälltåget runs a night train to Östersund in high season, with a transfer to Ramundberget. The nearest railway station is Røros on the Norwegian side.
    • By air: Røros is about 80 km away, Sveg 150 km, and Östersund and Scandinavian Mountains Airport about 200 km.

How taking the train to the mountains with children works is explained in train to the mountains.

    Funäsfjällen or another mountain resort?

Funäsfjällen suits families who want several ski areas to choose from and who enjoy cross-country skiing. Vemdalen is in the same landscape and is covered in Vemdalen. If you want all the children's slopes within walking distance, Sälen with kids and Idre Fjäll are the alternatives, and all the Swedish mountain resorts are gathered in ski trips in Sweden. If it is your first ski trip, the rest of the planning is in the first ski trip with children, and which week your municipality has its school holiday is in winter sports break 2027.
