Short answer
The 2027 winter sports break falls in four different weeks. Week 7 (15–19 February) for Västra Götaland and Jönköping County, week 8 (22–26 February) for Skåne, Halland, the rest of Småland, Östergötland, Södermanland, Uppsala and Örebro, week 9 (1–5 March) for Stockholm, Gotland, Värmland, Västmanland, Dalarna as well as Gävle and Luleå, and week 10 (8–12 March) for most of Norrland. Several municipalities differ from their county.

The winter sports break is the week when half of Sweden heads to the mountains at the same time – but not in the same week. The 2027 winter sports break is spread over four weeks, from week 7 in western Sweden to week 10 in Norrland, and several municipalities differ from the rest of their county. Here is the whole list, county by county and municipality by municipality, with tips on which week will be busiest on the slopes.

The winter sports break is set by each municipality, not by the county. The list below applies to municipal compulsory schools in the 2026/2027 school year – independent schools may have other dates, and upper secondary schools sometimes too.

All municipalities with published school calendars have their winter sports break in week 9, 1–5 March 2027: Botkyrka, Ekerö, Haninge, Huddinge, Järfälla, Lidingö, Nacka, Norrtälje, Nykvarn, Nynäshamn, Salem, Sigtuna, Sollentuna, Solna, Stockholm, Sundbyberg, Södertälje, Tyresö, Täby, Upplands Väsby, Upplands-Bro, Vallentuna, Vaxholm, Värmdö, Österåker. Uppsala County – week 8
Most municipalities have their winter sports break in week 8, 22–26 February 2027: Enköping, Heby, Håbo, Knivsta, Tierp, Uppsala, Östhammar.

Kronoberg County – week 8
All 8 municipalities in the county have their winter sports break in week 8, 22–26 February 2027: Alvesta, Lessebo, Ljungby, Markaryd, Tingsryd, Uppvidinge, Växjö, Älmhult.
Kalmar County – week 8
All 12 municipalities in the county have their winter sports break in week 8, 22–26 February 2027: Borgholm, Emmaboda, Hultsfred, Högsby, Kalmar, Mönsterås, Mörbylånga, Nybro, Oskarshamn, Torsås, Vimmerby, Västervik.
Region Gotland – week 9
On Gotland the winter sports break is in week 9, 1–5 March 2027.
Blekinge County – week 8
All 5 municipalities in the county have their winter sports break in week 8, 22–26 February 2027: Karlshamn, Karlskrona, Olofström, Ronneby, Sölvesborg.
Skåne County – week 8

Which week is busiest in the mountains?
- Week 7: Western Sweden and Jönköping are on holiday. For families from Gothenburg, Branäs, Sälen and southern Norway are closest. Otherwise the mountains of Dalarna are quieter than in the following weeks.
- Week 8: Skåne, Småland and the Mälaren valley are on holiday. In Norway, Oslo and Akershus have their winter holiday this week, so resorts like Hafjell and Trysil get many Norwegian visitors.
- Week 9: the busiest week in Dalarna. Stockholm, Dalarna and Värmland are on holiday at the same time, and the Vasaloppet race runs from Sälen to Mora on Sunday 7 March 2027. Book early and expect queues in Sälen and Idre.
- Week 10: the Norrland week. The mountains of Jämtland and Lapland fill up, while the southern mountains are often quieter – and the days are longer and lighter.
Tips: If you can choose yourselves – for example if the children go to an independent school or you take time off in a different week – the week before or after your own winter break week is often cheaper and quieter on the slopes.
Planning the winter sports break
Going to the mountains? Start with ski school – it fills up first. The children's groups in Idre Fjäll run Monday to Friday, and at several resorts, such as Hafjell, children under seven ski free with a helmet.
