Klövsjö is both a mountain village and a ski area, and they are not in the same place. The village with the church, the red farmhouses and the lake lies down in the valley, and the ski area is just under five kilometres away. Up on the mountain, Klövsjö is linked to Storhogna, and together they make up one of the three ski areas in Vemdalen. How Vemdalsskalet and Björnrike differ from Klövsjö is in the guide to Vemdalen.

Klövsjö and Storhogna – two mountains, one system

Klövsjö and Storhogna have 16 lifts and 21 runs between them, linked by a connecting lift. From Storhogna, take Solliften over to Klövsjö.

Klövsjö has earned the nickname The skiers' ski resort for its three black runs, but don't let that put you off. There are also wide carving slopes and Valle's Miniland for the youngest, and a snow park with a green and a red line near Mellanliften and Klövsjö Express.

Storhogna is higher up and skis on natural snow. The slopes are green, blue and red, and it is the quieter of the two areas – a good choice for a family with a three-year-old who is about to stand on skis for the first time.

    The children's areas

In Klövsjö, Valle's Miniland is the place for the youngest, with a magic carpet and the ski school meeting point. When the children can manage a lift to the upper part of the mountain, Valle's Skogsbrant awaits at the top of Solliften – a forest trail through the trees that the whole family can ski.

In Storhogna, the children's area with a playground is next to Storhogna M. There is also a magic carpet by Storhogna Högfjällshotell and Kalle's lift. In the area there is a restaurant, toilets, a barbecue spot and a warming hut with a children's corner.

Choose the area based on the children's level. With small beginners, Storhogna is the safest choice. If you also have an older child who wants a challenge, Klövsjö works better, as the black runs and Valle's Miniland are in the same area.

Valle's ski school – from three

The ski school in Klövsjö and Storhogna is run by SkiStar, and Valle's groups take children from three to nine. The children learn through play and are grouped by level, and during lessons they are covered by accident insurance through the ski school. When you book, you choose which area the lessons will be in.

    • Klövsjö: meet in the children's area at the top of the magic carpet (P).
    • Storhogna: meet at the bottom station of Kalle's lift (M).

Book ski school in the area where you are staying. The areas aren't far apart, but it feels a long way in ski boots with a four-year-old at nine in the morning. If you want to compare with another Swedish ski school for small children, there is Idre Fjäll ski school.

The lift pass – destination pass or SkiPass Vemdalen

There are two ways to ski in Klövsjö, and it is good to know the difference before you book:

    • SkiPass Vemdalen is valid in all four areas: Vemdalsskalet, Björnrike, Klövsjö and Storhogna. With it, you can go to Björnrike's big children's and beginners' area, or to Vemdalsskalet for a day.
    • The destination pass is only valid in Klövsjö and Storhogna and costs less. That is plenty for a family who will stay on the children's slopes all week.

Children up to and including age six ski free, whichever pass you have. From age seven, children need their own pass, including for ski school. Current prices are shown when you book.

So the pass that is valid throughout Vemdalen is called SkiPass Vemdalen and is sold by SkiStar. SkiStar Bus runs between the ski areas in winter, with stops in places including Storhogna, and the SkiPass works as a bus ticket.

    The village by Lake Klövsjön

What sets Klövsjö apart from most ski resorts is the village. Klövsjö is a genuine mountain village by the lake, with the church in the middle of the meadows and old barns scattered across the fields, and the ski area is a little way up the mountain. There is a food shop, restaurants, a café, a petrol station, ski hire and Klövsjö Stenugnsbageri, the village's obvious place for fika – the Swedish coffee break – with freshly baked bread and light lunches.

On an afternoon without skiing you can walk along Lake Klövsjön or go sledging. In Storhogna there is the activity centre Storhogna M with bowling and billiards, and a spa at the mountain hotel if the adults need a break.

If you want to stay near the lift, there are cabins, apartments and hotels by Klövsjö Express and Hotell Klövsjöfjäll. In Storhogna you stay somewhere quieter and closer to the cross-country trails, and in the village closer to the lake and the bakery.

    How to get to Klövsjö

From Stockholm it is around 490 kilometres to Vemdalen, and one of the usual routes goes via Järvsö and national road 83 – Järvsö with children makes a good stop on the way or a destination in its own right for a shorter weekend. From Gothenburg it is about 650 kilometres.

Without a car, there are several options:

    • Night train: in winter, Snälltåget runs to Östersund or to Röjan, and a bus transfer takes you on to Vemdalen. From Röjan the transfer takes between a quarter of an hour and an hour, depending on where you are staying.
    • Bus: the regional bus 164 between Östersund and Funäsdalen stops in Klövsjö village, at Klövsjö ski area and in Storhogna. Härjedalingen stops at Storhogna M and the mountain hotel from December to April.

    Klövsjö or another mountain resort?

Klövsjö suits families who want peace and quiet, a real village and a short trip to the slopes, but don't need lots of entertainment. If you want more resorts on the same pass, Funäsdalen with children is a little further west. Compare it too with Sälen with kids or the smaller family ski areas in Branäs and Romme Alpin. Which week your municipality has sportlov, the Swedish February school ski break, is in winter sports break 2027, and the rest of the planning is in the guide to the first ski trip with kids.
