Järvsö is not a mountain village but a village in Hälsingland, deep in the forest and about three hours from Stockholm. That is exactly what makes it good for families with children. You step off the train in the middle of the village, and Järvsöbacken is a couple of hundred metres away, with 25 runs, 9 lifts and two children's areas. In the 2026/27 season, the ski area is open every day from 18 December to 4 April.

Two children's areas on opposite sides of the hill

Skidcenter Norr has the biggest children's area, with two magic carpets, two gentle button lifts and two wide, easy slopes. The lift starts twenty metres from the ski hire and lift pass sales, and the lift hosts help the youngest up. A new jump course is prepared every morning, and this is where you will find the snow carousel, where the children can practise riding a real button lift before heading out onto the slopes.

By Bergshotellet on the south side there is a smaller children's area with a button lift and two magic carpets. If you are staying at the hotel, you walk straight out onto the slope.

Both children's areas have a restaurant, a barbecue spot and toilets, and sledges and ski bikes can be borrowed free of charge. There are also play areas in the snow with spades, tractors and wooden horses for anyone who needs a break from skiing.

Choose the children's area first and the accommodation second. Skidcenter Norr has the most for the youngest to do and is the easiest to reach from the village and the station. Bergshotellet is a better fit if you are staying on the south side near Vildriket.

Loa, the word hunt and Loacupen

Järvsö's mascot is called Loa and is out in the children's areas every day. In the afternoons, when ski school is over, Loa gathers the children for activities, and the adults can then take a few runs of their own. Out on the slopes, Loa has hidden letters for Loa's word hunt, and the leaflet with the rules can be picked up at Skidcenter Norr or Bergshotellet.

Loacupen is a free drop-in race in the children's area at Skidcenter Norr for children aged three to seven. No sign-up needed, and everyone who takes part gets a medal. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the ski area usually has evening opening, so the children can fit in a few runs in the dark under floodlights.

If you want to ski on your own for a while, the ski instructors can look after the children in the childcare, up to three children from the same group.

The ski school – from age three

The group ski school in Järvsö has groups by both age and level, and the table above shows all the children's groups. The youngest go to Snöbollar (Snowballs), a gentle introduction for three- to five-year-olds where the lesson starts by the magic carpet and the button lift is only tried once the child is ready. Six- to nine-year-olds who have never skied start in Smygare (Sneakers).

The groups run Monday to Thursday or Friday to Sunday. At Skidcenter Norr, the ski school meets at the ski school signs just below the magic carpet in the children's area. At Bergshotellet, the signs are just outside the hotel, to the right of the main entrance.

    The lift ticket

Children up to and including age six ski free on all lifts when an adult is with them. From age seven, children need their own lift pass, and the youth pass applies up to and including age 17. Current prices are shown when you book.

Vildriket – formerly Järvzoo – in winter

Many people think of Järvzoo as a summer destination, but the wildlife park is now called Vildriket and is open every day all year round. In winter you walk the same three-kilometre wooden boardwalk through the forest and see Nordic animals such as wolves, lynx, Arctic foxes, musk oxen and forest reindeer in their winter coats. The cafés are only open in summer, but along the way there are rest spots where you can light a fire, so pack sausages and hot chocolate. It makes a good afternoon when legs are tired after ski school.

In summer, Järvsö is best known for cycling: Järvsö Bergscykel Park has downhill trails, and there are easier mountain bike trails and pump tracks suitable for children. But that is a different trip.

    The train to Järvsö station

The train is the easiest way to get to Järvsö. There are daily departures from Stockholm Central, direct with no change in about three hours, and from Uppsala it takes around two and a half hours. From Gävle, X-tåget runs north towards Ljusdal via Ockelbo and Bollnäs and stops in Järvsö after about an hour and a half. From Gothenburg the journey takes seven to eight hours.

The station is in the middle of the village, with Ica, restaurants and the ski hire close by. From there it is about 400 metres to Järvsöbacken. During the ski season a free ski bus runs on fixed loops between the station, the accommodation and the slopes, and there is a taxi that can be booked in advance. The long-distance bus Härjedalingen also stops at the station.

If you are driving, take the E4 to Tönnebro and then national road 83 to Järvsö, about three and a half hours from Stockholm. The same road continues towards Vemdalen, so Järvsö also works as a stop on the way to Klövsjö with children.

    Accommodation

With small children, it is most convenient to stay near one of the children's areas:

    • Bergshotellet is right on the slope by the southern children's area, about 1.3 kilometres from the station.
    • JBP Hotell is also on the slope, with double rooms.
    • Järvsöbaden is a historic guesthouse in the village, about 800 metres from the south lift.
    • Cabins and apartments with self-catering are available both in the village within walking distance of the station and on the south side of the hill, for example Järvsö Stugby, Bergsstugorna and Järvsöbranten near Vildriket and the south lift. Changeover days are usually Thursday and Sunday.

    Järvsö or a mountain trip?

Järvsö suits a family who want to ski for a long weekend or a sportlov week – the Swedish February school ski break – without a long drive, and where the youngest are standing on skis for the first time. If you want a proper mountain feel and the open fells, Sälen with kids or Klövsjö is the next step. Other family ski areas within easy reach are Romme Alpin in Dalarna and Branäs in Värmland. Which week you have the holiday is in winter sports break 2027, and planning for the very first trip is in the guide to the first ski trip with kids.
