Old Fashioned – for the whiskey lover
Classic, powerful and timeless cocktail where the whisky takes center stage.
- 1 glass
- 7 ingredients
- 7 steps
The Old Fashioned is one of the world's most classic cocktails and an obvious choice for anyone who appreciates whisky in its purest form. With few ingredients and simple preparation, the drink lets the spirit speak, balanced by sugar, bitters and citrus. It's a drink that requires precision rather than creativity – and that's exactly why it's so appreciated.
It's perfect as a nightcap after dinner, in front of the fire, or as a calm way to end the evening. The Old Fashioned is not a quick drink, but something you sip slowly and let develop in the glass.
Method
- Put the sugar cube in a low glass.
- Drop the Angostura bitters over it and add a small splash of water.
- Muddle gently until the sugar has dissolved.
- Add ice and pour the whiskey over it.
- Stir slowly until the drink is chilled and slightly diluted.
- Squeeze orange zest over the glass to release the oils, then drop it in.
- Garnish with a cocktail cherry if desired.
Tips!
Use a large ice cube if possible – it melts more slowly and gives better balance to the drink. Stir gently and avoid shaking, the Old Fashioned should be clear and still.
If you want to vary the drink, you can:
• use raw cane sugar for a deeper flavor • swap orange zest for lemon zest • adjust the amount of bitters to taste • try different types of whiskey for a new character
