Need inspiration for your next outing? Then you've come to the right place.
Here we've gathered some of Sweden's most popular hiking trails – from enchanted old-growth forests to dramatic mountain landscapes and blooming summer meadows. Whether you prefer hiking during peak season or appreciate crisp autumn air and fewer mosquitoes, there's something here for you.
This list isn't a complete guide, but a selection of trails loved by hikers across the country. Some are easily accessible and family-friendly – others offer serious challenges in remote mountains. Just pick whatever suits you and your sense of adventure best!
Grövelsjön – mountain hiking with a view
The Grövelsjön mountains are a favorite for many. Here the trails run across both the Swedish and Norwegian sides – through easily accessible mountain forests, past peaks and along small streams. The best part? You decide for yourself how long or short your trip will be. After a day in the mountains, the sauna and dinner await at the mountain lodge, with a view that beats most others.
The Vålådalen Square – wilderness and cozy cabins
A perfect four-day loop in mountain terrain for anyone who likes hiking from cabin to cabin. Start and finish at Vålådalen Mountain Lodge, where you can unwind with good food and a comfortable bed. In between, overnight stays await in STF's mountain cabins, where self-catering is possible and the silence is total. The hike offers old-growth forest, mountain bogs and flower meadows.
Österlen Signature Trail – a coastal Skåne adventure
Here sea, history and hiking combine into one. From Nybrostrand to Andrarum, you get to experience the coastline, the Ale Stones and the view from Stenshuvud. The daily stages are 5–19 km, and there are several STF accommodations along the way. Österlen suits all year round – it's especially beautiful in spring and autumn when nature changes color.
Kungsleden – Sweden's most iconic trail
There's something special about walking on classic ground. Kungsleden stretches between Abisko and Hemavan – 40 mil (about 400 km) of mountains, valleys and babbling water. The northernmost stretch, from Abisko to Kebnekaise, is both high-alpine and easily accessible thanks to mountain cabins along the way. Hike under the midnight sun or enjoy autumn's crackling colors. Just make sure you're well prepared – some stages are both long and demanding.
Laponia with children – hiking at the kids' pace
Mountain hiking with children? Absolutely. You just need to choose the right pace and have something extra fun to look forward to. In the Laponia area, you can walk between selected mountain cabins at a comfortable pace. Here streams run with drinkable water, lemmings peek out from under the boardwalk, and adventure is around every bend. Feel free to finish at STF Saltoluokta with a sauna, dinner and a mountain view.
Saltoluokta–Kvikkjokk: the gateway to Sarek
This part of Kungsleden takes you through some of the wildest terrain we have. Just over seven mil (70 km) between two mountain lodges – via open moorland, mountain forest and valleys. You pass Sarek in the distance, but stay on the marked trail. This is no beginner's hike – a map, compass and mountain experience are recommended.
The Jämtland Triangle – the classic loop
A real classic. From Storulvån to Sylarna and Blåhammaren – and then back again. Suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. Here you can sleep well at the mountain lodges, cook your own food in the self-catering kitchens, or enjoy a three-course meal in the restaurant. Extra tip: choose a weekday week in June or after school starts in August – fewer people, just as magical.
