Short answer
Mürren is a small village without cars at 1,638 metres, on a cliff edge high above the Lauterbrunnen valley with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau opposite. The Schilthorn ski area has 54 kilometres of pistes and reaches almost 3,000 metres, where the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria from the James Bond film stands. Mürren suits families who want peace, views and a small village – but there are fewer slopes than in Grindelwald and Wengen.

Mürren lies on a cliff edge high above the Lauterbrunnen valley, at 1,638 metres, and opposite rise the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It is a small village with old wooden houses, a few hotels and no cars – you only get here by cable car, or by cable car and train.
It is one of the quietest villages in the Jungfrau region, and perhaps the one with the most dramatic view.
How to get up there
From Lauterbrunnen there are two ways:
- The cable car to Grütschalp and then the train along the cliff edge to Mürren – with views all the way.
- The cable car from Stechelberg via Gimmelwald.
You leave the car in the valley, and in the village you walk.
The Schilthorn ski area
Mürren has its own ski area, Schilthorn, which is not linked with Grindelwald and Wengen on skis – but the same lift ticket is valid in the whole Jungfrau region.
| Difficulty | Kilometres | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | 19 km | 35 % |
| Red | 23 km | 43 % |
| Black | 12 km | 22 % |
The area has 54 kilometres of pistes and reaches almost 3,000 metres. It is smaller and steeper than its neighbours, but also quieter. Around the village and at Allmendhubel there are easier slopes for the children.
Piz Gloria – James Bond at 3,000 metres
At the top of the Schilthorn stands Piz Gloria, a revolving restaurant that became famous in the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service from 1969. Up there is an exhibition about the film, and from the terrace you see a sea of peaks. The air is thin at almost 3,000 metres, so take it easy with young children.
Inferno
Every January the Inferno is held, one of the longest downhill races in the world for amateurs, from the Schilthorn down towards the valley. The race has been held since 1928 and has almost 2,000 participants. If you want peace and quiet – choose another week.

Mürren, Wengen or Grindelwald?
Mürren is the smallest and quietest, with the dramatic view and the Schilthorn. Wengen also has no cars but has direct access to the bigger ski area, and Grindelwald is the largest, with the most easy slopes on First. We compare more Swiss resorts, such as Zermatt, in ski resorts in Switzerland.
