Short answer
Adelboden-Lenk is one of Switzerland's largest ski regions, with almost 200 kilometres of pistes in six areas between the villages of Adelboden and Lenk. Children up to and including age five ski free, the ski school takes children from age three, and the children's areas with Globi and Vogellisi make it easy to get started. You can get here without a car – by train to Frutigen and then half an hour by bus.

- Beginner slopes Practice areas with magic carpets in Geils and on the Engstligenalp, and more than half the pistes in the main area are blue.
- Snow reliability The main area lies between just over 1,200 and 2,200 metres. Snow cannons cover 60 per cent of the main pistes, and the Engstligenalp at 2,000 metres holds its snow for a long time.
- Distance from accommodation to lifts The village is spread out. Plan on taking the bus to Geils or Chuenisbärgli unless you are staying near a lift.
- More than skiing A sledging park on the Tschentenalp, ice skating at the sports arena, an indoor pool in Frutigen and winter walks – and the World Cup in January.
The rating is our overall assessment for families with children based on the criteria above – not a paid placement.
Adelboden lies at the end of the road. The bus from Frutigen winds its way up through the Engstligental, and beyond the village there are only mountains – the Engstligen Falls, the Engstligenalp plateau and the Hahnenmoos Pass across to Lenk. No road goes any further. That makes the village quiet and very easy to visit without a car.
Together with Lenk on the other side of the pass, Adelboden forms one of Switzerland's largest ski regions: almost 200 kilometres of pistes and 63 lifts in six areas. For families, it is the children's areas, the ski school and the train that make Adelboden-Lenk a good choice.
Adelboden and Lenk – two villages, one ski area
The most important thing to understand is that the villages are linked on skis, not by road. The main area runs from Chuenisbärgli and Silleren above Adelboden via Geils and the Hahnenmoos Pass to Metsch and Lenk. By public transport, the same journey takes more than two hours, via Frutigen, Spiez and Zweisimmen.
- Stay in Adelboden if you want the most hotels, the ski school's biggest children's areas and short bus rides to the lift.
- Stay in Lenk if you want a quieter village with its own railway station and the children's world at Stoss on the Betelberg.
- Small separate areas: the Engstligenalp, Tschentenalp and Elsigen-Metsch are included in the same lift pass and make good days out when the main area is busy.
More than half the pistes in the main area are easy, and snow cannons cover 60 per cent of the main pistes.
Children's areas – Vogellisi and Globi
- The Vogellisi piste between Hahnenmoos and Geils is the region's newest family piste, with eight play stations about the fairy-tale characters Vogellisi and Tuck.
- Globi on the Engstligenalp – the Swiss children's book character has his own children's area for the very first runs on the plateau at 2,000 metres. The area opens on 19 December 2026 and has a season lasting well into May.
- Tschentenalp has a sledging park with runs for different ages and different kinds of sledges.
- Stoss children's world on the Betelberg is Lenk's equivalent.

The ski school and the age rules
The Schweizer Skischule Adelboden has been around since 1933 and follows the Swiss Snow League, where the children move up through the levels with medals and the mascot Snowli. The office is in the Tourist Center on Dorfstrasse.
- Spielgarten, ages 3–4: play and first steps on skis, in Geils Park or on the Engstligenalp.
- Kids Village and Blue League: beginner children stay on the practice areas with magic carpets in Geils and on the Engstligenalp.
- Red League and up: meeting point at Sillerenbühl.
- The Globi ski school on the Engstligenalp has lessons at weekends and over Easter.
A few things the ski school itself stresses: helmets are compulsory for children, every child must wear a printed course ticket with the parents' mobile number, and the children bring a packed snack for the break. Meeting at the office in the village costs a little extra, as the children are accompanied to the slope.
Lift passes: children up to and including age five ski free, child rates apply for ages 6–15 and youth rates for ages 16–19. Age is based on date of birth, and everyone must be able to show ID. Lift passes are sold with dynamic pricing – the earlier you buy online, the cheaper it is.
Chuenisbärgli – the World Cup slope
Every January the men's World Cup giant slalom and slalom are held on Chuenisbärgli, one of the toughest giant slalom slopes on the whole tour. In winter 2027 it is on 9–10 January. For the rest of the season anyone can ski the slope, and there is a timed giant slalom course where the children can race against the clock. The World Cup slope itself is for good skiers – with small children, the race weekend is an experience to watch, not a week to book for quiet slopes.
The train via Frutigen
Adelboden is one of the easiest Alpine villages to reach by train:
- From Bern: train to Frutigen in about 45 minutes.
- From Zurich: just under two hours to Frutigen, changing in Bern.
- The last stretch: bus 230 from Frutigen station to Adelboden, once an hour, about 30 minutes.
From Zurich airport the whole journey takes around three hours, and from Geneva about three hours and forty minutes. To get to Lenk, you go via Spiez and Zweisimmen instead. How to get here from Sweden is explained in train to the Alps.
A week without a car
What makes the week car-free is the guest card and the lift pass:
- The guest card is yours from the first night. It gives you free travel on the local buses in Adelboden and the Adelboden–Frutigen bus, plus discounts on swimming and activities. The journey to and from the resort is not included.
- The lift ticket is also valid on the Gilbach–Bergläger–Geils bus, which is not included in the guest card.
- Engstligenalp can only be reached by cable car – a car-free plateau with Globi and quiet slopes.
If you want a completely car-free village, Wengen and Mürren in the Jungfrau region are the next step. There you stay with no cars at all, but expect a more expensive week.
Adelboden-Lenk or the Jungfrau region?
The Jungfrau region, with Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren, has the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and more dramatic views. Adelboden-Lenk is quieter, more family-oriented and has more children's areas. Both can be reached by train via Spiez, and from Adelboden to Grindelwald takes just over two hours by bus and train.
