History and facts about Tjolöholm Castle
Tjolöholm Castle's history stretches back to at least the 14th century, when the site is mentioned as Thiulfö in historical Danish records. The current castle was built between 1898 and 1904 in an elegant blend of Tudor style and the Arts and Crafts movement, making the building unique in Sweden. The architect was Lars Israel Wahlman, and it was commissioned by James Fredrik Dickson and his wife Blanche Dickson. (Wikipedia)
Shortly after construction began, James Fredrik Dickson happened to cut his finger. He bandaged the wound with foil from a bottle to stop the bleeding, but this led to blood poisoning that he did not survive, and he died in 1898 before the castle was completed.
After his death, Blanche Dickson continued the work on the castle, which was completed in 1904. Over the years, the castle and its surroundings have been the hub of several different activities — from a private residence to a museum and public attraction, and since 1987 it has been managed by a foundation with Kungsbacka Municipality as the principal. Besides the castle itself, there is an old workers' village (Allmogebyn) and several historic buildings that originally belonged to the Tjolöholm community, as well as a castle woodland, church and beautiful gardens reflecting the architect's vision of a cohesive landscape. (tjoloholm.se)

Our Experience – Sledding, Sunset, and Sausage Grilling
In January 2026, we visited Tjolöholm just after a snowstorm. Under a sparkling sunset, we went sledding on the open slopes of the castle grounds — a perfect activity for kids and adults once the snow has settled. Next to the "Montrose" playground there are grill spots and benches, where we grilled sausages right there in the crisp winter air. That combination of nature, play and simple food outdoors made the visit extra memorable.
